Sex and Pregnancy Discrimination

Of course it is against the law for an employer to discriminate against an employee because she is a woman.  And because only women can bear children, treating an employee differently because she is pregnant is gender discrimination.

California laws go even further.  To be certain that woman are not discriminated against because they are pregnant, California provides protection against an employer taking any negative job action against a woman who, for example, must take off time for doctor's appointments for conditions arising from the pregnancy.  There are a number of State and Federal statutes that protect women, including the very far-reaching Pregnancy Discrimination Act (PDA), the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA), the California Family Rights Act (CFRA), and the Fair Employment and Housing Act (FEHA).
